Cheap Fruit And Veg

Story Details

How lucky are we in South Australia?

Fresh produce is everywhere and if a shopper looks in the right places he or she can bag a bargain.

Today Tonight went shopping to find the cheapest fruit and veg in town and out of town.

We went north, south, west and headed for the hills in our quest for cheap fruit and veg.

Mount Barker fresh "is" in them thar hills and the Fragnito Brothers, James, Dean and Mark are all about fresh and cheap fruit and veg.

"We go to the market every day of the week," says James.

"We put it on our truck and we deliver it straight up to Mount Barker resulting in a low cost to customers."

But where possible the boys buy directly from local hills growers making the produce even cheaper.

Down south and we found the "Lettuce Inn" at Southgate Plaza shopping centre in Morphett Vale doing their bit for cash strapped shoppers.

Owner Sylvana Tropiano says "we've noticed that people instead of doing one big shop a week, will do 2 or 3 smaller shops."

Some customers even drive a half an hour to shop at the Lettuce Inn.

Then we headed west to Farmer Joe's at Port Adelaide where "cheap" is their catch cry and according to Joe Anderson they are beating the supermarkets at their own game.

"We're always at least 2 or 3 dollars cheaper than the supermarkets and the quality is even better," says Joe.

Up north and we can't find any place cheaper than Virgara fruit and veg at Angle Vale.

Craig and Michelle Bitmead are the driving force behind Virgaras and tell us they genuinely want to help the battlers.

"There's a lot of people who struggle and it's good to be able to help them out and give them a bargain," says Michelle.

Apart from the normal specials, the Bitmeads promise to beat any brochure price by 10%.

A further 10% discount to pensioners on Tuesdays, free groceries with a purchase over $10 and things really heat up with the free sausage sizzle on Fridays.

All our cheap fruit and veg merchants say while supermarkets spend millions on advertising, the public is coming back to fruit shops in droves through word of mouth.

Craig Bitmead says he has the inside running.

"I used to be a manager in some of the chain stores so I know what they're about and we're here to keep em honest."

And to prove it all 4 have come up with some knockout specials for Today Tonight viewers all day Thursday the 21st of August only.
