Heat Wave

Story Details

THERE'S BEEN ONE THING ON EVERYONES LIPS THIS WEEK... THE WEATHER.

AND TODAY WE BOILED THROUGH OUR FOURTH STRAIGHT DAY ABOVE 40 DEGREES... WHILE IT DIDN'T QUITE REACH THE PREDICTED TOP OF 46... BUT WE WERE STILL THE HOTTEST CITY ON THE PLANET...

"Im just barely coping now."

"I've made the best of what I've got, I have a fan which I have on if I'm in the lounge and windows and curtains closed."

AND MELBOURNE WASN'T MUCH BETTER...THE CITY HIT A TOP OF 44 DEGREES... THE EXTREME HEAT PLAYING HAVOK WITH THE TENNIS...

DESPITE BEING AROUND 10 DEGREES HOTTER ON COURT... THE CALL TO SUSPEND OUTSIDE GAMES UNTIL AFTER 4PM WASN'T MADE UNTIL TWO THIRTY.

BUT IT WAS PLAY ON... FOR THOSE COMPETITING ON THE MAIN STAGE...WHICH CAUSED AN OUTCRY FROM TENNIS STARS.... TAKING TO TWITTER TO LET OUT SOME STEAM....

THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN... IS THE ONLY THING DISTRACTING 92 YEAR OLD BARBARA MORELY... FROM THE ADELAIDE HEAT...HER ONE FAN.. HER ONLY RELIEF....

THERE ARE MANY AUSSIES WHO CAN'T AFFORD THE LUXURY OF AIRCONDITIONING....

AND FIND OTHER WAYS TO KEEP COOL...

"It moves the air around and it does cool my face I adjust it if I feel hot in the body I can turn it down," said Barbara.

BUT BARBARA ISN'T ONE TO COMPLAIN...

"I suppose it's a question of common sense and making the most of what you've got, and being grateful that you've got it because many people haven't got that," said Barbara.

MARK WILSON IS THE PRIMARY CARER TO HIS UNCLE..THEY'RE BOTH PENSIONERS LIVING IN HOUSING TRUST...

THEY WERE FORTUNATE TO HAVE BEEN GIVEN A PORTABLE AIR CONDITIONER.. BUT IT DOES LITTLE MORE THAN TAKE THE EDGE OFF...

"The hottest part of the house would be the kitchen and the bedrooms and the bathroom and that, you walk in there and that's a sauna."

AND THOSE WITH AIRCONDITIONERS WOULD HAVE HAD A TASTE WITHOUT ONE WHEN POWER OUTAGES
