THEY COME IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES... BUT GETTING THAT PERFECT FIT IS A STRUGGLE FOR MANY PARENTS…
“Over 80 per cent of children are other than a standard e fitting so they either go narrow or very wide,” said Jan Elliot.
“Shoes do play an important role. Our view is shoes are the icing on the cake,” said Ted Jedynak.
PODIATRIST TED JEDYNAK... SEES HIS FAIR SHARE OF SHOE RELATED INJURIES…
“Number one is heal pain… so there are a range of conditions that affect heal pain. Achilles, tendernitis, partifcaitis,” said Ted Jedynak.
HE SAYS SHOES PLAY A VITAL ROLE IN FOOT HEALTH… BUT GETTING THAT PERFECT FIT IS WHAT MATTERS MOST.
“The best thing about getting a good shoe is to get a good shoe fitter and a good shoe fitter will provide a shoe that has the most important part of the shoe is the strong heal counter,” said Ted Jedynak.
“I definitely want the shoe to last for the whole year so that's really important,” said Natalie Leonow.
MUM OF TWO NATANLIE LEONOW KNOWS THE IMPORTANCE OF GETTING THE RIGHT SHOE... WHICH IS WHY SHE'S ENLISTED EXPERT SHOE FITTER JAN ELLIOT...
“A lot of damage in adulthood is caused by ill-fitting shoes,” said Jan Elliot.
WITH MANY SCHOOLS ADOPTING NEW SHOE POLICIES... SHOES LIKE THIS ARE COMMONLY SEEN IN THE SCHOOL YARD…BUT WHAT SHOULD WE BE LOOKING FOR IN TERMS OF VALUE AND FIT?
“ It needs to be a good retaining mechanism. A lace up is typically the best but a strap or firm fitting velcro straps that hold the shoe on to the foot is the ideal situation.”
SO WHICH SHOE FITS BEST? UNDER TED'S MICROSCOPE IS THE CLARKE'S BLACK LACE UPS... PRICED AT 89.95... CLARKS BROWN T-BAR VALUED AT $94. TARGET'S $29 STRAP UPS. $18 BLACK VOLLEYS AND $5 SLIPS ONS. WE'LL CHECK BACK IN LATER FOR TED'S TOP PICKS.
“Going back to school can be an expensive time for parents but it doesn't have to be,” said Louise Hartwig.
MUM'S LOUISE HARTWIG AND SALLY ANN BRUUN HAVE MADE IT THEIR MISSION TO HELP PARENTS SAVE… SETTING UP WEBSITE OLD SCHOOL TRADING WHICH HELPS PARENTS SELL AND BUY SECOND HAND UNIFORMS ONLINE.
“Some school uniforms from some of the private schools can cost up to a couple of thousand dollars just for getting everything started. So we sort of looked at providing a market place online which is really for parents to link up and buy and sell uniforms and hopefully save some of the costs involved in starting up,” said Louise Hartwig.
FOR WEB DESIGNER LOUISE... MOVING SECOND HAND UNIFORMS TO THE ONLINE WORLD MAKES SENSE FOR THE BUSY MUM...
“Some school have them, a lot of them don't. So if you're school doesn't have one then you've really just got to ask around so having the site is really just a away for parents to try that option and see if there's anything available by having a quick look online,” said Louise Hartwig.
AFTER LAUNCHING LAST WEDNESDAY THE SITE HAS BEEN INUNDATED WITH 7,000 POSTS AND RISING.
“There just wasn't an easy way to link them together. Once putting an ad on and once seeing it… they're half the time probably around the corner from each other and don't realise that they had something to sell and one has something to buy,” said Sally-Ann Bruun.
“You can buy cheaper clothes and they don't hurt their bodies but buying shoes that don't fit properly it's the most important that you do get them fitted properly,” said Jan Elliot.
SECOND HAND UNIFORMS ARE GREAT BUT JAN FROM OLLIE ASHENDEN ADVISES PARENTS TO LOOK FOR WELL TRUSTED BRANDS WHEN LOOKING FOR THE PERFECT SCHOOL SHOE AND ALWAYS BUY BRAND NEW.
“Clarks are good because they keep half sizes and all the different widths. We've just got a new brand that's been around since the 1700's that's called Start Rite from England as well. So they're proving to be popular,” said Jan Elliot.
SO WHAT ARE TED'S BEST AND WORST PICKS?
“You're pretty much getting what you pay for here. These are the cheapest options and they're not particularly good. The worst shoes would definitely be these,” said Ted Jedynak ha she examined the black slip on shoes.
“The reason for that is as far as support around the heel and ankle goes there's none. You can just about breathe on that and there's no resistance. These shoes they might protect you against gravel and some uneven surfaces but they're probably not going to be much use beyond that,” Ted Jedynak continued.
“Not far behind that are these shoes here and again these shoes have no side support and with minimal resistance,” said Ted Jedynak as he examined another pair of black canvas shoes.
NOT TOO SURPRISING… BUT WHAT ABOUT TARGET'S $29 OPTION?
“These were also quite a cheap shoe but they do have some good features in that the support around the heel section is actually quite good. The double strap mechanism is going to hold the foot into the shoes quite effectively. From a pure value perspective these are pretty good,” said Ted Jedynak.
BUT FOR HIS TOP PICK HE CAN'T GO PAST CLARKS….
“This one is definitely right up the top of the scale. The heel stability here is very good. As I'm pushing there there's a lot of resistance. The classic black Clarks lace up… good strong stability, good heel, soul and an excellent retaining mechanism through the whole lace going across the in step of the food. That's a really good solid shoe,” said Ted Jedynak.
SO, IT SEEMS THERE'S A GOOD OPTION FOR WHATEVER YOUR BUDGET...
“Price is not the be all and end all. Most often you get what you pay for but the best thing is to have a good shoe fitter who can recommend the best shoe for the appropriate child or for the appropriate foot,” said Ted Jedynak.
