Unley Shop Fight

Story Details

It's an Unley Road icon – an antique store that's been operating for almost hundred years.

McKay's Mart has always had an array of second-hand furniture on display out the front to help draw in curious customers.

But the council's changed the rules on them and their famous display might have to disappear.

Statement from City of Unley Acting CEO Megan Berghuis

The new Footpath Trading Policy aims to balance the outdoor trading needs of businesses with safety and accessibility requirements for all.

We are currently implementing the Footpath Trading Permits and overall it has been received favourably by traders.

We have designed this process to make it as easy as possible for traders to obtain a permit, including making all new footpath trading permits free of charge in 2018/19.

We note some confusion exists on where council lands starts and stops, particularly in areas where there is a setback as in this instance.

Accessibility and safety are major driving considerations.
